BBC, Al Jazeera and AFP Take on Uhuru Challenge

A Kenyan social media trend dubbed #UhuruChallenge, initiated to mock President Uhuru Kenyatta's overindulgence in commissioning projects, has gained the attention of three major International media outlets.

BBC was first to splash a story titled, #UhuruChallenge: Kenyans mock president for launching projects on January 9 where it highlighted the hilarious projects Kenyans were launching to sarcastically mimic the Head of State.

Al Jazeera came in a notch higher in the #UhuruChallenge with a video showcasing how Kenyans were poking fun at Mr Kenyatta.

The recording named: Uhuru Challenge Pokes Fun at Kenyan President went viral on social media with a section expressing shock at how widely the #UhuruChallenge had spread.

Kenyans shared the Al Jazeera video with some congratulating KOT for the good job they had done in making the hashtag go viral.

The latest international media house to dive into the challenge was Agence France-Presse (AFP), an international news agency headquartered in Paris, France.

With a splash, KOT roast Uhuru Kenyatta over 'fetish' for project launch, AFP penned: "Kenya's notoriously caustic tweeters have taken aim at President Uhuru Kenyatta's love for a good ribbon-cutting, mocking his endless unveilings of often bizarrely named projects."

#UhuruChallenge first came to the spotlight following the commissioning of various projects in Mombasa where the Governor, Hassan Joho, sharply criticised him.

Mr Joho told off the President stating: "I am grateful that the President is in Mombasa. But I have to say this, I know the history of this project Kenyatta has just commissioned and it is an old one. It started in 2010 together with other projects and it is called Municipal Programme.

"We want to see projects that have been started by Jubilee here in Mombasa. I want to hear it being announced today that Jubilee Government will leave Billions for new projects in my county. This project is an old one and Mombasa wants projects initiated by the Jubilee Government,” Joho boldly said as Kenyatta looked on.
