Bill to Give Minors Access to Condoms and Contraceptives Sails Through Second Reading

The Reproductive Health Care Bill, 2014 yesterday went through the second reading in parliament.

This is despite heavy opposition from religious and other leaders who have warned that the bill will have abject moral repercussions if enacted.

The Ministry of Health is opposed to the bill.

The bill proposes that adolescents be allowed to access condoms and birth control pills without the parents’ approval.

It further states that teenagers have a right to sexual education and supply of contraceptives.

The Bill is sponsored by nominated senator Judith Sijeny.

She insists that the bill is not aimed at allowing or promoting sexual immorality.

In a country that heavily subscribes to religious and cultural beliefs yet still embracing modern ways of living, the bill continues to spark debate and elicit mixed feelings.
