Boinett Threatens Police After Raila Team Riots

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet on Thursday issued a strict order to police officers attached to VIP protection, warning them against accompanying those they are serving to situations that were against the law of the land.

“All officers have been reminded to discharge their duties in strict conformity with the law and the Service Standing Orders,” Boinnet stated.

In a statement signed by Police Spokesman George Kinoti, Boinnet stated that any officer who was found culpable would face severe disciplinary actions that may include dismissal as well as court action.

The order follows Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) demonstrations against the Independent Electoral and Bondaries Commission (IEBC) that had been termed illegal by the police.

Officers accompanying the Opposition officials were spotted during the riots where one of them was captured on camera with a pistol and handcuffs.

On the day of the protest, a heavy contingent of  General Service Unit (GSU) were deployed to repulse those trying to demonstrate around the area.

Nairobi County Commander Japheth Koome, who was at the scene stated: “The protest will not be allowed and we will use all means possible to stop it. Why are they going there? They should instead seek alternative channels to air their grievances and not disrupt activities in town”.
