BVR Kits Al Shabaab Militants Stole in Mandera Will Not Affect Anything - IEBC Assures Kenyans

Three Biometric Voter Registration (BVR) kits were on Thursday stolen during a raid on an Administration Police (AP) camp in Arabia, Mandera.

The morning attack caused panic with many raising questions on why the terrorists walked away with the machines and the ripple effect it would have on the ongoing mass voter registration exercise.

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), however, assured Kenyans that the data lost during the raid could still be retrieved.

"We fear 3 BVR kits may have been lost in the Mandera attack. But we expect no loss of registration data because of the backup procedures," IEBC's Communication Manager Andrew Limo said.

The Commission added: "If confirmed that the 3 BVR kits are in fact lost, rest assured that voter data on them is encrypted and cannot be abused."

The militants also stole a police land cruiser and three guns. During the attack, a communication mast in the area was destroyed, hindering other officers on the ground from assessing the damage.

Confirming the incident, Lafey Deputy County Commissioner Eric Oronyi stated: "Communication has been cut off and we cannot confirm the exact damage but things are not good."

"We have lost no officer but one student was hit by a stray bullet during the incident from their family house," Oronyi said.
