CORD Offers Solution To Pay Teachers

The Coalition for Reforms and Democracy (CORD) now wants money slashed from the budgets of the National Youth Service and laptop projects to pay teachers.

While addressing the press on Friday, CORD said that it intended to present to parliament a bill that would see Sh10 Billion taken from NYS and another Sh10 Billion from the laptop project then channeled towards solving the pay rise stalemate between teachers and government.

On Wednesday, the Opposition held a rally at Uhuru Park to show support for the educators where the leaders unveiled a solidarity account that would allow Kenyans to make contributions that would cater for teachers' welfare.

Former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka, a co-principal in the coalition  added that they would hold peaceful demonstrations every Tuesday in an initiative dubbed Occupy Harambee Avenue until teachers got their increased salaries.

Jubilee Members of Parliament have however dismissed the opposition's efforts arguing that they were collecting money to fund their 2017 campaigns. The National Alliance Chairman, Johnson Sakaja dismissed CORD's efforts to save teachers through the solidarity account saying that the move was meant to milk money from Kenyans.

“The much-hyped rally has resulted in the Launch of an account where they are planning to swindle Kenyans to fund their 2017 campaigns. They can't even collect 1 million signatures or offer a solution to teachers' issues,” he stated
