Court of Appeal Endorses High Court's Nullification of 2014 Police Recruitment

The Court of Appeal has ruled in favor of the verdict by High Court which nullified the police recruitment exercise that took place on 14th July 2014.

The exercise which had seen 10,000 candidates selected has been the object of controversy after allegations that it had been marred by corruption.

Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) had filed a case in the High Court in August challenging legality of the recruitment.

IPOA argued that the National Police Service Commission (NPSC) had illegally used sub county committees in the exercise.

High Court judge Isaac Lenaola who presided over the case then nullified the exercise and barred NPSC from issuing recruits with appointment letters.

The Attorney General alongside police recruits however moved to the Court of Appeal in November, challenging the High Court's ruling.

Appellate Judges Wanjiku Karanja, William Ouko and John Mwera  Friday ruled that the 2014 recruitment was riddled with corruption.

While the case was still in court, a fresh recruitment exercise was carried out in April this year, following High Court's ruling.

10,000 candidates were selected in the fresh exercise and reported for training into the force.
