Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri Attacks NASA Over Threat to Boycott Elections

Devolution Cabinet Secretary Mwangi Kiunjuri on Wednesday affirmed that the General Elections will be conducted as scheduled even if the National Super Alliance (NASA) boycotts the exercise.

The CS explained that NASA had no authority to stop an election, therefore the process of voting, tallying, and announcing results will still happen as planned.

“The only thing that can stop elections is a legal process. If the Supreme Court rules that we cannot do the election, then we shall abide by that ruling but not mere intimidation,” Kiunjuri stated.

Kiunjuri's ally Mutahi Kimaru who is also Laikipia East Member of Parliament, on his part, claimed that the Opposition was planning chaos and anarchy ahead of the forthcoming elections.

“By threatening to boycott the elections, it is obvious their intention is to plunge the country into political violence,” Mutahi highlighted.

On Tuesday,  NASA threatened to boycott the August 8 General Election if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) was allowed to adjust results of the Presidential elections announced at the constituency level.

The Alliance declared that it would not participate in the polls if the Court of Appeal overturned an earlier ruling stating that the numbers announced by the returning officers would be final.

The Opposition coalition issued the threat after IEBC appealed against the judgment issued by a three-judge bench terming it an error which should be reversed by the Court of Appeal.

The elections body, in their appeal, argued that the three-judge bench gave powers to returning officers to declare presidential results which is a preserve of the Chairman of the Commission.
