Drop Case Before We Talk, TSC Told

Kenya National Union of Teachers has stated that it would not have conciliatory meetings with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) unless TSC dropped the case they filed against the union at the court of appeal.

KNUT's Secretary General Wilson Sossion, argued that the two parties could not engage in talks when the Government was opposed to the implementation of the 50-60 percent pay increment.

The industrial court however on  Friday, suspended the ongoing teachers' strike for 90 days and directed the warring parties to hold a dialogue and end the crisis. The court ordered the  Labour Cabinet Secretary, the teachers' unions and the TSC to form a conciliatory committee within 30 days in order to solve the teachers' salary stalemate .

In his ruling, Judge Nelson Abuodha stated that if the reconciliation talks failed within the 90 days, teachers could then go ahead to lodge a trade dispute.  Abuodha also warned the TSC against victimizing the striking teachers and ordered for the payment of September salaries.

Unions representing teachers have remained defiant insisting that the strike was still on adding that they would analyse the Friday ruling with their lawyers before charting a way foward for their members.
