Police Officers Beaten, Abandon Operation

Police officers were attacked by drunk men at Sitatunga area in Cherangany, Trans Nzoia County during a crackdown on illicit brew.

The officers who had accompanied Sokomoko Assistant Chief Milka Limo to destroy the illegal liquor, were forced to desert their operation after the merrymakers pelted them with stones, blocking their access into the chang'aa dens.

The security men were forced to run for their safety, as shooting in the air could not stop the enraged drinkers from attacking them.

Area Senior Chief Joseph Wayele condemned the inciden affirming that they would not relent in bringing those involved to book.

"The village is notorious for consumption of illicit brews and I will not allow drunkards to control the area by blocking officers from doing their work," Wayele was quoted by the Standard.

The incident comes at a time when the Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho has been hard on chiefs over their reluctance in curbing the alcohol menace in their areas.

Kibicho has in the recent past publicly sacked several chiefs and taken away their uniforms, a move indicating the intensity of the crackdown.
