A police officer was on Thursday morning shot dead at Santon area in Kasarani, Nairobi.
The officer who was on duty with his colleague at a crime scene, is said to have been shot by unknown gangsters who later fled the scene.
Confirming the 4am incident, Kasarani OCPD Robinson Mboloi stated that the officers had responded to an alert that a robbery incident was taking place in the area.
It was then that three armed robbers ambushed them sparking a gunfight. One of the officers was shot dead while the other sustained an injury.
The OCPD stated that the injured officer was taken to hospital and the deceased's body to the Kenyatta University mortuary.
According to a Standard report, the slain officer had been on the forefront in the crack down of violent criminals in the area, raising speculations that he could have been a victim of his good job.
Police have since launched investigations into the suspicious killing.
