Former Education Minister Joseph Otiende Dies at Kisumu Hospital

The first Minister of Education in Kenya, Joseph Otiende, died on Wednesday morning at 4.30 am.

Mr Otiende, who served in former President Jomo Kenyatta's Government, died at Avenue hospital in Kisumu County.

The Minister passed on at the age of 100 years.

According to his son, Mr Maleya Chanzu, Otiende had been hospitalized for two months.

Before his demise, several politicians including ODM chief Raila Odinga, Bungoma Senator Moses Wetangula, ANC party leader Musalia Mudavadi among others visited him at the hospital.

Otiende was in the first Cabinet of 15 members and served between 1963 and 1969.

The educationist taught at the Alliance High School for eight years, before venturing into politics.
