A Jubilee gubernatorial aspirant in Kakamega has called for President Uhuru Kenyatta to immediately disband the General Service Unit (GSU) over their brutal operation that was carried out last week in Mumias.
Amukowa Anangwe, who previously served as a Cabinet Minister, stated that the GSU had proven to be unreliable owing to its use of excessive force whenever it is called to intervene on security matters.
He noted that Kenya is a democracy with a progressive Constitution on matters of human rights, and respect for rule of law.
“It is high time the government disbands the unit since it is no longer desirable," Anangwe stated in a statement on Monday.
He added that the GSU unit has over the years demonstrated that it is incapable of adjusting to social order.
The Jubilee politician further called on President Kenyatta's government to ensure all the officers who are culpable in the Mumias incident are held to account.
Last week, residents complained that security officers tortured them and used excessive force in operations to recover seven rifles and 184 bullets that had been stolen from a police station.
After an uproar by local leaders in the region, the operation was stopped before any of the stolen items could be recovered.
