Retired Kenyatta University Vice Chancellor Prof Olive Mugenda, has opened up on the supposed Sh100 Million send off package offered to her by the University Council.
Mugenda made startling revelations on Tuesday regarding the reported hefty package, saying that the amount was inflated and accepting it would have tarnished her reputation.
Speaking during a farewell event organized by students in her honour at the university grounds, Mugenda said that the true amount offered to her was Sh30 Million.
"What was being offered as a performance award was never Sh100 Million, it was actually about Sh30 Million.
“I thought, well, if people are going to inflate it then talk badly about it then I do not have to spoil my name," said Prof Mugenda.
It was earlier reported that the former VC was to receive among other goodies; a Sh10 Million vehicle, a residential home worth Sh20 Million in an area of her choice and a 10-day holiday for two to a preferred destination.
She, however, chose to turn down the retirement package which had caused outrage on social media when details emerged.
In a statement to media houses outlining reasons for declining the attractive offer, the full professor acknowledged the appreciation she had received from the university students and staff saying she was doing her public duty.
On Tuesday, the Kenyatta University fraternity showed their gratitude by offering various gifts including two return air tickets to the United States.
Mugenda earned a milestone for her appointment as the Vice Chancellor of Kenyatta University being the first woman to hold such a position in the Great Lakes Region (Kenya, Burundi, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda).
The former KU boss is lauded for transforming the institution to a world class status, owing to the infrastuctural development realised during her 10-year tenure.
