Funyula MP Paul Otuoma to Vie for Busia Governor as Independent Candidate

Funyula Member of Parliament Paul Otuoma has been cleared to vie for the Busia governor seat as an Independent candidate.

Otuoma was on Tuesday cleared by the Registrar of Political Parties (RPP) a few days after officially resigning from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) where he was the party's Vice Chairman.

The MP fell out with his former party ODM after his rival for the Busia seat, incumbent Governor Sospeter Ojaamong was awarded the party nomination ticket.

Last week, he handed in his resignation letter to the Party Secretary General requesting to be removed from the party list with immediate effect.

The Registrar had earlier issued a ruling that gave nomination losers wishing to vie as independent candidates two weeks to resign from their parties.

"If one resigns from his or her party and writes to us, then the law on party hopping does not affect them after April 26. All they can do is write to us and provide their symbols on or before the 8th of May," explained the Registrar Lucy Ndung'u

Dr Otuoma becomes the first of such disgruntled politicians to pursue the independent candidate option.
