Gangs Preparing to Cause Havoc in 2017 Elections

Mombasa County Commissioner Nelson Marwa has warned residents that notorious gangs in the area were preparing to cause havoc during the 2017 General Election.

Speaking after a security meeting at the County Offices, Mr Marwa said the youth gangs were being financed by influential individuals and were responsible for crime in the area.

The Commissioner ordered a crackdown on the gangs operating under the name, Wakali Kwanza (Survival for the Fittest), that have been terrorizing residents of Kisauni.

The splinter groups which include Wakali Wao (the Toughest of Them All) and Wakali Kweli (Truly Tough), are said to be paid Sh500 to conduct gang attacks even during the day.

Mr Marwa urged politicians to aid in the fight against crime instead of supporting it by bailing the criminals whenever they are nabbed.

“If those politicians come to the station trying to bail them out, arrest them also. Let them go and defend themselves in court after their arrest,” said Marwa.

The gang whose members are aged between 12 and 18 years, are said to walk in groups of 10-15 with wielding pangas and knives.
