Baringo Senator Gideon Moi has now revealed details of how his plan to purchase a chopper for the Jubilee government was dramatically rejected by the Ministry of Interior.
According to Moi, he had promised his constituents that he would purchase a surveillance chopper to enhance the work of security agencies.
After his win, the Baringo Senator narrated that he paid Sh3.8 Million to a consultancy firm that researched on the best chopper for the security surveillance.
Unfortunately, the government was not pleased with his donation and he was quickly summoned by the then Interior CS Joseph Ole Lenku.
He added that despite his pleas that the chopper would be operated by police officers working in the county, Ole Lenku would not bulge and he immediately issued him with a formal letter barring him from donating the aircraft.
“Lenku told me to stop involving myself in matters security, saying it was not a devolved function. At that time, I had already spent Sh3.8 Million from my personal kitty,” Moi told residents in Baringo North Sub County during the funeral service of Ng’orora area chief, Thomas Cheleken.
Moi has now blamed senior government officials for sabotaging his well-intentioned move that would have prevented the security crisis currently facing his county.
“Had they (government) allowed me to purchase the chopper, we could not be talking about numerous killings in the area. It could have been easier to tackle the bandits in the shortest time possible. We need advanced security technology in Baringo East, Baringo North and Baringo South areas,” the former President's son stated.
Suspected bandits from East Pokot have been wrecking havoc in parts of Baringo North and Baringo South with thousands of locals being displaced, scores killed and injured and hundreds of livestock stolen.
