Government Approves Sh300 Million Donkey Slaughterhouse

The Government has approved the establishment of a Sh300 Million donkey slaughterhouse at Chemongoch in Baringo County.

Agriculture Cabinet Secretary Willy Bett allowed the opening of the facility declaring it as an export slaughterhouse, which is in the last step before licensing.

Goldox Donkey Abattoir has a capacity to slaughter 100 donkeys a day with the meat set to be exported to China where the demand is reportedly high.

Two Chinese nationals Lu Jing and Lu Donglin are behind the project which after starting operations will create a new source of income for farmers who will be supplying the slaughterhouse with the animals.

A source who spoke to journalists revealed that the slaughterhouse had already received an approval from the Veterinary Services Department and was only awaiting the final licence and commissioning.

The source also said that the company will be breeding it's own donkeys on a 100-acre piece of land to supplement animals provided by farmers, so as not to exhaust the number of donkeys available.

Goldox Donkey Abattoir will be the second of its kind in Kenya after a multi million donkey slaughterhouse was opened in Maraigushu village in Naivasha, Nakuru County in 2015.

The Nakuru County government gave the go ahead for the slaughterhouse to start operations in an effort to regulate the business and curb donkey theft in the area.
