Interior and Coordination Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery has declared that December 27th, 2016 will be a public holiday.
In a Gazette notice, Mr Nkaissery noted: "It is notified for the general information of the public that the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and Coordination of National Government, in exercise of the powers conferred by section 3 of the Public Holidays Act, declares that Tuesday, the 27th December 2016, be a public Holiday."
Nkaissery's announcement comes amid confusion among Kenyans who were unsure whether the 27th would be a holiday.
The questions were prompted by the fact that Christmas – 25th December – falls on a Sunday which essentially needs to be pushed to Monday as per the Constitution. Incidentally, Monday, December 26 will also be a holiday – Boxing Day.
"The Public Holiday Act, under section 4 provides that when a Public Holiday falls on a Sunday, the first succeeding day (next day), not being a Public Holiday, shall be declared a Public Holiday,” the Public Holiday Act states.
The Federation of Kenya Employers had also raised the same issue highlighting that their members were questioning on the same.
