Government Spokesman Eric Kiraithe Warns Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama Against Threats to Disrupt Polls

The Government has warned Machakos Senator Johnstone Muthama against issuing threats to disrupt the August 8 polls.

Spokesman Eric Kiraithe on Wednesday stated that the government was not taking lightly the statements by Mr Muthama and other opposition politicians threatening to disrupt the General Election, as they could derail the electoral process.

Kiraithe noted that the remarks by Muthama three months to the General Election, risked slowing down the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission's (IEBC) momentum to conduct a free, fair and credible election

"We note that Senator Muthama and his colleagues do not have any legitimate ability to stop the election. They can only do this by inciting their supporters to use violence to disrupt the process," Kiraithe noted.

The government spokesman called into question the Opposition's commitment to the strengthening and independence of institutions such as the judiciary.

"These threats are a blatant attempt to interfere with a judicial process and to influence the conduct of our courts, contradicting the Opposition's rhetoric about the necessity and merits of an independent Judiciary," added Kiraithe.

He urged the Opposition to bind itself to the rule of law and subject itself to arbitration and resolution mechanisms if any disputable issues arise.

The National Super Alliance (NASA) had questioned IEBC’s motive in the decision to appeal last month’s court ruling which had declared that the presidential results announced at the Constituency level would be final.

Senators Muthama and James Orengo had alleged that the push by IEBC to appeal the decision had been necessitated by Jubilee in a ploy to rig elections.

They were addressing the press at the Moi International Airport, Mombasa.
