Governor Mwangi wa Iria Impeached by Murang'a MCAs

Murang'a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has been impeached after a serious tussle with Members of the County Assembly (MCA) which reportedly affected operations in the county.

The MCAs finally made good of their threats to impeach the Governor whom they accused of gross misconduct and abuse of office.

Mwangi wa Iria's impeachment was supported by 34 members while 15 opposed the drive.

The leaders were unhappy with the Governor and pointed out various reasons that ought to have removed him from office.

The ward representatives faulted the Governor for withholding funds meant to facilitate their oversight role in the county assembly.

Mwangi was impeached due to lack of accountability in the management and use of county resources by incurring unsustainable debt amounting to Sh2.5 Billion.

The impeachment motion tabled by nominated member, Mary Waithera highlighted that Mwangi wa Iria allegedly spent public funds in private commercial entities, with the auditors reports indicating that the county spent over Sh28 Million in the controversial Murang’a Investment Co-Operative Society known as Shilingi Kwa Shilingi.

Last week the Governor said that he was not afraid of the impeachment motion alluding that the campaign to remove him had been withdrawn.

The matter now rests with the Senate that will determine Mwangi wa Iria's fate.
