Health CS Mailu, Nurses Union Agree to End Strike

The nurses’ strike, which was in its seventh day, has been called off.

The government and the officials from the Nurses’ union on Sunday agreed on a deal that will resolve the crisis that has paralyzed operations in public hospitals across the country.

“All the issues we have will be resolved in house. But we want to assure Kenyans we are united. We are back to work for Kenyans,” said Kenya National Union of Nurses deputy secretary general Opetu Maurice.

The officials from the nurses' union stated that their resumption to work was driven by the suffering of Kenyans over the past week as well as by the Naivasha tragic accident that left victims in dire need of medical assitance.

However, their demands for a salary increment were not immediately met with a comprehensive Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) expected by March 2017.

Health CS Dr Cleopha Mailu has urged the doctors to follow suit and end their strike.

“Come back to the negotiating table so that the strike by doctors can come to an end. Negotiations is a give and take,” he stated during a joint press briefing with nurses' union officials.
