High Court Temporarily Blocks Hiring of Tanzanian Doctors

The High Court has issued an order blocking the Government from hiring over 500 foreign medical practitioners and dentists.

The directive was issued after five Kenyan medics moved to court to petition against the hiring of the doctors from Tanzania by the Ministry of Health.

The decision to bring in the foreign practitioners was made after Health Cabinet Secretary Cleopa Mailu held talks with President John Magufuli two weeks ago.

President Magufuli said the doctors would help mitigate the effects of the recently ended strike and address the shortage of medical professionals in public hospitals.

Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) Secretary General Ouma Oluga, strongly opposed the move claiming that Kenya had over 1400 unemployed medics.

The case will now be mentioned on April 9th.
