"I Will be MP by Ballot or by Bullet" SONU Leader Babu Owino Declares

Embattled Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) Chairman Paul Ongili, popularly known as Babu Owino, has announced his next move after President Uhuru Kenyatta passed a law that prevents him from seeking re-election for his current position.

Ongili took to his Facebook page where he shared news of the signing of the 2016 Universities (Amendment) Act.

He satirically posted that the law was President Kenyatta’s new year gift to him, claiming that the head of state had introduced the law to target an individual.

The flamboyant politician would later announce that he will be seeking the Embakasi East MP’s seat.

His announcement appeared to be a declaration of trouble as he suggested that he would get the seat by the "ballot or by bullet".

I will be the next Embakasi east Mp by ballot or by bullet. Tibim,” he posted in his characteristic belligerent tone.

The long-serving student leader became the most prominent casualty of a law introduced by the Education Ministry and signed into law by the President.

The new law stipulates that a university student leader will hold office for a one-year term and be eligible for re-election only once.

It also disqualifies a person who has served as a member of the student council of a university for two terms from being elected to the same position at any other university in Kenya.
