IEBC Chairman, Wafula Chebukati, Reveals the Greatest Problem Kenya is Facing Ahead of Election

The recently appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has expressed great concerns ahead of the much-anticipated General Election.

Mr Chebukati stated that the deadlines set for the various activities before the poll day could be quite overstreching due to unavoidable circumstances.

The IEBC boss noted that there was a possibility that the Electronic Voter Identification Devices (EVIDS) would arrive late for the month-long biometric verification exercise scheduled for May 10.

He mentioned that the earliest the system could be delivered was the end of May which would mean the electoral body would be running behind schedule.

Chebukati further highlighted that it would take time to install the machines, deploy to various areas and train the personnel to operate them.

"And that is if nothing happens in between. The truth is that in terms of deadlines, we are not doing very well," Chebukati said.

However, in an interview with the Standard Chebukati firmly maintained that the election would not be postponed.

He highlighted that the Commission was committed to ensure that the August 8 election will be conducted on the said date in a free and fair manner.

He divulged that the electoral body was working on another plan that would see Kenyans verify there details if the EVIDS arrive late.

"We are sticking to the deadlines," he affirmed.

Currently the IEBC is conducting the second phase of mass voter registration which ends on February 14.
