IEBC Commissioners Ready to Go Home

Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) have announced that they are ready to quit office and pave way for new officials.

IEBC Deputy Chairperson Lilian Mahiri Zaja and Commissioner Yusuf Nzibo stated that they were tired of being threatened and were willing to go home, if Parliament decided that they should leave.

Addressing a press conference in Naivasha, the Commissioners complained of persistent intimidation and threats from various sectors, accusing the body of siding with one faction of the political divide.

"We are tired of being threatened every day by various entities. I am ready to go home if Parliament feels am not doing a good job," announced Nzibo.

The officials were responding to a report by the Parliamentary Accounts Committee (PAC) which proposed that the current electoral body be reconstituted and investigated over irregularities in the procurement of Biometric Voter Registration kits used during the 2013 elections.

"Contrary to allegations by PAC, the electronic system did not fail but some of the kits arrived late and thus the personnel did not have enough time to study them," he added.

Regarding the failed Okoa Kenya initiative, the Commissioners defended themselves claiming they just followed their mandate.

“Okoa Kenya names verification process was open. We are ready for scrutiny. Some of the documents were ineligible and there were so many repeats in terms of names and ID numbers,” they explained.
