IEBC Ordered to Extend Voter Registration to Thursday February 16

The High Court on Tuesday afternoon extended the voter registration deadline by two days following a case filed by activist Okiya Omtata.

Justice Chacha Mwita pushed the deadline to Thursday, February 16 when Omtata's case will be heard.

Omtata requested for the extension arguing that the law requires the process to be continuous until two months prior to the General Election.

Making her ruling, Justice Mwita directed the petitioner to serve the electoral body with the suit papers.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an IEBC official in charge of communication stated the body would have to comply with the order given.

Various leaders including the Opposition and Members of Parliament had requested for extension of the registration to ensure more Kenyans get a chance to participate in the upcoming polls.

Earlier on, IEBC Chairman Wafula Chebukati had maintained that the exercise would not be extended due to the limited time for preparation of the upcoming polls.

Chebukati had stated that the Commission will require to conduct a clean up of the register to avoid any errors such as double registration.

The registration exercise was set to end today evening and had threatened to lock out many who were yet to be enlisted.
