The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has confirmed that the voter registration exercise will continue even after the set deadline, but at the constituency level.
Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, an IEBC official in charge of the exercise, clarified that persons who would not have enlisted as voters by March 15, could still do so at the constituency headquarters.
“The registration still continues at the constituency level. Whoever does not register by tomorrow can still visit our constituency offices and get registered,” she said.
The officer said that what was concluding by March 15, was the ward level registration but the enlisting of voters at the sub-counties would continue until three months before the General Election.
“The constituency registration is continuous up to three months before the election according to the law,” the officer affirmed.
The electoral body further stated that the current mass voter registration would not be extended due to lack of sufficient funds since the exercise was costly to conduct.
“We are not extending because of lack of adequate funding. Unless we get money we can't extend because it comes with a lot of spending and currently we don't have resources,” IEBC clarified.
The registration has been ongoing for the past four weeks with IEBC hoping to net 4 Million new voters by the end of the exercise.
However, the electoral body announced that it had only managed to record 868,073 electorates by Friday last week, amid speculations that the deadline would be extended to allow more Kenyans register.
