Joho Storms Roadblock, Finds Sh80,000 in Officer's Handbag

Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho made an evening impromptu visit to Miritini revenue collection roadblock, nabbing a total of Sh200,700 gathered in bribes from officers.

Six officers, among them two cashiers and four inspectors at the roadblock along Mombasa-Nairobi highway, could hardly explain why they had that amount of money in their pockets and drawers.

It is reported that a female officer was found with Sh80,000 stashed in her handbag during the Thursday night raid, with some officers claiming that they had withdrwan the money from the bank for family projects.

“They could neither account for the money nor explain how they came across such huge sums hidden in pockets and an office drawer," one official who accompanied Joho in the raid was quoted by the Star.

Governor Joho vowed that he would continue fighting corruptions at all levels, firmly stating that no one would be spared in the quest.

He added that Mombasa county lost Sh1.5 Million everyday to corruption at that barriers, Kongowea market and through bribes issued to county government officials.

The officers were arrested and taken to the Changamwe Police Station to record statements on the matter.

The move by Joho comes after the country led by President Uhuru Kenyatta, launched an onslaught on the vice amidst emergence of several corruption scandals in both the national and county governments.

Kenyatta began cracking the whip on government officials mentioned in graft cases, when he appointed other inviduals to replace members of his cabinet who featured in various corruption cases.
