Joseph Obiri, a watchman and vegetable vendor in Nairobi's Hazina estate, trounced his rivals to clinch the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) ticket for the Nairobi South Ward seat.
Mr Obiri stated that he was motivated to join politics to fight for the rights of his people after being subjected to hardship by the current leadership.
He further stated that he hated seeing politicians taking advantage of the poor by giving them cash to vote for them and then abandoning them after being elected.
"I decided to join politics after seeing the cry of my people and how politicians were taking advantage of them hence I decided to stand and educate them on the importance of electing someone who stays with them and understands their problems," he stated.
Mr Obiri further narrated how he had overcome a lot of challenges hence inspiring his political ambitions.
He noted that he had been operating his Kibanda since 2002 together with his wife while working as a security guard during the night to provide for his family.
