Jubilee Abandons Use of Smart Cards for Party Register in Upcoming Nominations

The Jubilee National Elections Board on Tuesday announced that the Party had abandoned the use of smart cards in favour of the membes' register.

The Board’s Vice Chairperson, Mrs Esther Kangogo, while speaking to aspirants at Murang’a Teacher’s College, indicated that the party will not use Jubilee smart cards as earlier indicated, but will instead use a register of all the party’s registered members.

In the new structure, all aspirants will be required to marshal their supporters to register as Jubilee party members so that they are eligible to participate in the upcoming party primaries, she explained.

Mrs Kangongo assured the aspirants that the party would provide a list of all registered members in every polling station on the nomination day, and enough ballot papers for every polling station to ensure nobody is locked out of the exercise.

The vice chairperson added that the party’s nominations will be carried out in every polling station registered by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and will start at 6 am and end at 6 pm.

Mrs Kangongo used the event to reiterate the Secretary-General’s message emphasizing that any aspirant found engaging in violence and voter bribery will be disqualified and their names sent to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).

The move to abandon the use of smart cards comes after a section of Jubilee aspirants had expressed their concerns on the issue indicating that the cards were not evenly distributed and as a result, a huge number of their supporters would have been locked out.

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko had previously indicated that the card system was discriminatory as some leaders had bought a huge number cards locking out supporters of other aspirants from accessing the cards.

Jubilee nominations are scheduled for later next month.
