Jubilee Party Aspirant Bishop Margaret Wanjiru Freed

Nairobi gubernatorial aspirant Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, who has been in police custody since Wednesday, has been freed.

On Thursday, Nairobi Chief Magistrate Francis Andayi had ordered that Wanjiru be detained for five days as police continue with investigations into an incident where she is accused of storming a City Park polling station and destroying ballot papers.

She was charged with malicious damage to property and causing public disturbance.

On Friday, however, the High Court overturned the decision and freed her on a cash bail of Sh100,000.

The decision came after Bishop Wanjiru moved to the High Court to challenge the decision made by Chief Magistrate Andayi to have her remanded until 02 May 2017.

Through her lawyer Kennedy Ochieng, Wanjiru succesfully challenged the decision, arguing out that her detention was a violation of her constitutional right.

Her lawyer also wanted the Sh500,000 bond reviewed downwards, arguing that it was too high.

With freedom at last, Bishop Wanjiru's supporters will be following keenly her next step. She contested the Jubilee party ticket for the Nairobi gubernatorial race won by Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko and came a distant third.

The decision to free her could not have come at a better time for her as Jubilee aspirants continue to file complaints on the recent party nominations.

Wanjiru will appear in court for the hearing of her case on a later date.

If found guilty, the celebrated Bishop of Jesus is Alive Ministries could face up to 2 years in prison.
