Deputy President William Ruto on Tuesday hosted Kalenjin community leaders at his Karen residence as part of Jubilee 's strategy to win the 2017 election.
During the meeting, Ruto informed the various Jubilee-allied politicians from the Rift Valley that the party would be mobilising the registration of 4.9 million additional votes in its strongholds.
Out of the 4.9 million figure, 1.6 million voters will be registered from the 11 counties occupied by members of the Kalenjin community.
The DP directed the leaders, under the leadership of Energy Cabinet Secretary (CS) Charles Keter, to spearhead the registration of all unregistered voters in their regions.
The massive recruitment is expected to give Jubilee an upper hand as it seeks to defeat the opposition parties in this year’s general election.
The Opposition has recently been on a unity overdrive with the proposed National Super Alliance (NASA) that is expected to bring together a number of leading political parties.
“For us to win in August, we must have numbers and this can only be achieved by asking the people who are eligible to vote to register in large numbers. As you campaign in your respective wards, constituencies or counties, you must mobilise the people to register so as to fully participate in the elections,” Ruto explained.
He informed the leaders that success in this year’s polls would go a long way in positioning him for the 2022 presidential run.
A similar drive is expected to be undertaken in the Mt Kenya region under the leadership of Devolution CS Mwangi Kiunjuri.
On Friday, President Uhuru Kenyatta will launch the Jubilee Party membership recruitment that will set the pace for the August 8th race.
"Once our membership programme is launched this Friday, it is upon you as leaders to embark on the programme to register as many members as possible. We want the people to have the ownership of the party,” Ruto stated.
