Kalenjin Elders Attack their Kikuyu Counterparts After Telling Ruto to Campaign Separately From Uhuru

Elders from the Kalenjin community on Wednesday asked the Kikuyu Council of Elders (KCE) to explain their recent statement that President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto should campaign separately.

A section of Kikuyu elders from Nakuru County told Ruto to campaign away from Kenyatta claiming that he was too aggressive in his campaigns and that he had created a lot of enemies that could make voters turn against Jubilee in 2017 Elections.

In a rejoinder, the Kalenjin elders questioned the motive of the remarks by their Kikuyu counterparts stating that the two leaders had entered an agreement in 2013 to work together.

"As a community, we feel there is a lot of hypocrisy in the statement. We ask leaders from Central to come out clearly on this matter.

"We want to know if they have decided to dump us. They should declare their stand early. As elders, we don’t want a repeat of 2007/8 chaos," James Lukwo, chairperson of the Kalenjin Council of Elders stated.

Mr Lukwo announced that they would back Uhuru and Ruto in the upcoming General Election and urged the Kikuyu elders to stop making statements that might jeopardise the unity of the two communities.

"The Jubilee team should campaign together to make sure it wins the elections… We should see our two sons campaigning together,” Mr Lukwo affirmed.
