Kalonzo Dismisses Rivalry Between Wiper and ODM in Mombasa

Anxiety has reportedly gripped a section of CORD leaders in Mombasa County over rivalry pitting three ODM politicians - Nyali MP Hezron Awiti, Senator Hassan Omar and Governor Hassan Joho.

The three leaders, who are contesting for Mombasa governorship, have on numerous occasions openly differed, with supporters of Awiti and Joho constantly engaging in violent confrontations.

Awiti and Omar have already expressed their bid to oust Joho, whom they accuse of abetting massive corruption in Mombasa.

Wiper and CORD co-principal Kalonzo Musyoka has however downplayed concern over the anxiety sparked by rivalry between the leaders.

Speaking in Mombasa during a voter mobilisation drive, Musyoka stated that there was no cause for alarm though the dispute has threatened to affect the Opposition's support in the Coastal region.

Musyoka described the disagreement which has threatened to divide the opposition's support in the region as “sibling rivalry”.

The Wiper leader further assured that the party would soon reach an agreement over who between Awiti and Omar would fly the party's flag in the gubernatorial race.

Wiper's influence which has been growing in the County has reportedly sparked tension in ODM which enjoys more support in the region.

Though all Mombasa MCAs were elected into office on an ODM ticket, a number have so far jumped to Musyoka's party in readiness for the August 8 General Election.

The race for the Mombasa Governor's seat is expected to be a heated one considering four strong leaders who enjoy quite a large following in the area are eyeing the post.

Apart from the three opposition leaders, the Jubilee Party last week endorsed businessman Suleiman Shahbal to take on the incumbent governor, with former MP Anania Mwaboza as his running mate.
