A Kenya Power vehicle was hijacked on Thursday by suspected Al Shabaab militants in the border town of Elwak in Mandera County.
According to Mandera South Deputy County Commissioner Peter Karanja, the driver of the vehicle was coming from a solar electricity plant when two armed men ambushed him.
“Two armed men emerged from the thickets and waved down the vehicle before pulling out the driver who was the only occupant as they took control,” the Commissioner told the Daily Nation. on phone.
Mr Karanja added that the two men drove the vehicle through Elwak Town towards Somalia without raising suspicion, but after ten minutes an alarm was raised.
The Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and Somalia National Army (SNA) in Somalia are pursuing the suspected terrorists.
On Wednesday, Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery extended the 12-hour curfew imposed in Mandera by 3 months.
The CS stated that the curfew was effective between 7pm to 5am daily to ward off the terrorists, who mainly operate at night.
The curfew was enforced after a lodge in Bishaare town was attacked leaving 12 people dead.
