Kenyan Governors to Move to Court over Withdrawal of Joho, Kingi Bodyguards

The Council of Governors (CoG) has announced that it will sue the state over the withdrawal of bodyguards to two Kenyan governors.

CoG Chair and Meru Governor Peter Munya stated that it was illegal for the Ministry of Interior Coordination to withdraw security for Mombasa Governor Ali Hassan Joho and his Kilifi counterpart Amason Kingi.

The security details of Joho and Kingi, who are allied to the CORD coalition, were reportedly withdrawn on Friday night –hours after engaging in a public spat with the President, whom they accused of neglecting the coast region.

On Sunday, President Uhuru Kenyatta, through State House Spokesman Manoah Esipisu, explained that the withdrawal of the security teams of Joho and Kingi was part of the local security’s command to restructure security in the area.

“Reorganizations happen across the country all the time. Local commands make local decisions and we should not jump to conclusions," Esipisu explained.
