The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairman Wafula Chebukati has sent a cautionary message to every Kenyan who has registered as a voter using their passport.
Mr Chebukati advised Kenyans who registered in 2013 General Election using their passports yet the document could have expired to head to the registration centres and verify their particulars.
According the IEBC boss this could hinder them from voting in the August 8 election.
"I also wish to state that those who registered with their passports in 2013 and whose passports have expired need to change their particulars at registration centres to enable them to vote," he said.
Chebukati noted that the only persons able to verify their details were those who registered in 2013.
"It is important to note that only those who registered in the 2013 election can verify their status at this point. You cannot register today and then verify in the afternoon or tomorrow," he stated.
Mr Chebukati further warned politicians against polarising the country noting that if they had any qualms regarding the registration process they ought to highlight it to the Commission first.
"Our call to our leaders is that they should respect the role of independent institutions, commit to peace and if there are any burning issues, come to us for dialogue and resolution. You don’t have to publicly express your fears on the electoral process when you can walk over here for discussions," Chebukati said.
He added: "The political actors also need to tone down on their rhetoric—measure their words and state only helpful facts, not rumours."
