Kenya's Amina Mohamed Loses African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson Position to Chad's Mousa Faki Mahamat

Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Amina Mohamed has lost in the elections for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson held at the 28th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

Ms Mohamed was defeated by Chad's Foreign Affairs Minister Mousa Faki Mahamat who garnered 38 votes in the seventh round.

Mr Mahamat will succeed South African politician Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma.

Other candidates who were contesting included: Equatorial Guinea's Agapito Mba Mokuy, Botswana's Dr Pelonomi Venson-Moitoi and Senegal's Foreign Affairs Minister Bathily Abdoulaye.

Ambassador Amina was accompanied by President Uhuru Kenyatta among other delegates to help her lobby for votes.

During the Assembly, the President of Guinea Alpha Conde was elected as the President of the African Union replacing Chadian president Idris Deby.
