Kenya’s Trending Topics on Tuesday 21st February 2017

Kenyans on social media on Tuesday engaged on a variety of conversations touching on various political and socio-economic developments.

Here are the day’s trending topics:

1. #NasaLaunch

The hashtag started in the afternoon, following a statement by the National Super Alliance (NASA) Technical Commitee that the constituent parties had agreed on the structures of their coalition - including how the flagbearer would be picked.  

The announcement was followed with an active online debate with many wondering why coalition was taking so long to announce their candidate.

Other users used the hashtag to get clarification after some media houses errouneously reported that the technical committee had struck a deal on the NASA presidential candidate.

The Opposition coalition has in the past changed deadlines regarding the day they would announce their final line up that would face the Jubilee team, ahead of the August 8 general election.

2. Southern Bypass

This convesation gained traction after two lions were spotted in Nairobi’s South C estate.

The lions are believed to have escaped from the Nairobi National park through the Southern Bypass whose contruction has interrupted the habitat.

Many users took to social media warning their fellow countrymen around that area to be careful.

3. #IssuesNotLies

The trend started as a bipartisan political conversation.

Supporters from different divides debated on which side was more focused in dealing with the issues that matter to Kenyans.

The conversation was largely a battle between Opposition supporters against the Jubilee enthusiasts as they made accusations and counter-accusations.

4. Kiraitu Murungi

Kiraitu Murungi appeared on the trending topics after it emerged that one of his campaigners for the Meru gubernatorial seat, Tigania East MP Mpuru Aburi, had brought a witchdoctor to 'bless' his candidature.

Murungi was forced to denounce the witchdoctor, clarifying that he only needed God and the people's support to win the seat. 4.

5. #MidiwoBettingBill

This conversation continued from Monday as netizens criticised National Assembly Deputy Minority Leader Jakoyo Midiwo over a Bill that he tabled in Parliament, seeking to regulate gambling.

Many of those who contributed on the trend were unhappy with Midiwo’s intervention arguing that there were more pressing issues facing the society.

6. #LeaveAuditorGeneralAlone

This trend started as a support for Government’s Auditor General Edward Ouko who has been the subject of political harassment from officials who are unhappy with his efforts to fight corruption.

7. #DrugsWarKe, Shanzu

The hashtag continued as suspected drug dealers Swaleh Yusuf, Asma Mohamed were charged with possession & selling 15kg of heroin worth Sh47 Million at Shanzu courts.

6. Embu County

This conversation started after it was reported that Meru Governor Peter Munya was set to receive over 100 aspirants from Embu County who are defecting from Jubilee to his PNU party.

7. President Uhuru Kenyatta

This topic appeared on the trending topics as a continuation of an opinion poll released on Moday that showed President Uhuru Kenyatta leading against his closes challenger ODM leader Raila Odinga.
