Key Al Shabaab Commander- Shirwa Among 11 Killed by KDF in Lamu

Luqman Osman Issa alias Shirwa, the man believed to have commandeered the terror attack at Mpeketoni which saw at least 65 people die last year has been killed by Kenya Defense Soldiers.

Shirwa is said to be among the 11 Al Shabaab militants killed Sunday after they tried to attack military barracks in Lamu.

Another person on interest from the 11 people killed is Thomas Evans, a Briton who converted to Islam and changed his name to Abdul Hakim before joining Al Shabaab.

KDF has however said that the report on Hakim is not conclusive as he could resemble another person and hence, DNA and other tests have to be conducted before the identity of the suspected deceased can be ascertained.

According to a report by The Standard, KDF spokesman Colonel David Obonyo on Monday confirmed the death of Shirwa saying it is a big step in the fight against terror as Al Shabaab no longer has a commander in Lamu.

The two were killed alongside nine of their counterparts in the Sunday morning attack which KDF strongly resisted.

Two KDF soldiers were also killed in the heavy combat.
