Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero and Senator Mike Sonko on Wednesday morning engaged in a physical fight during a session of the Senate Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
The meeting was cut short when the two, who have been in a downplayed tussle, got into a verbal exchange in front of the committee that was questioning Kidero over the county's financial spending for the 2013/14 financial year.
Sonko, who was appearing as a friend of the committee, was angered when a presentation he made accusing the Governor of illegally acquiring land was rubbished by Nyamira Senator Kennedy Mong'are.
"This county government has been taking away properties belonging to the people of Nairobi. They give fake demands of rates and then grab the property. They then kill the people. I have evidence to prove all these. I am ready to file an affidavit," said Mr Sonko.
Sonko went ahead to cite an incident where he alleged that Kidero hired goons to forcefully evict a Nairobi woman from her Sh2 Million property, after which the woman was mysteriously killed. The Nairobi Senator claimed that he had medical reports to prove the same, adding that he had more evidence to incriminate the Governor.
However, Senator Mong'are directed him to withdraw his remarks noting that the statements were "extraneous" but a defiant Sonko stood his ground. Sonko added that he had already reported the matter to the police.
Hell broke loose when Kidero began to respond to the Senators insults and, at that moment, the two moved towards each other and got physical.
Journalists were restricted from capturing the moment when the brawl turned ugly, with the flamboyant Senator continuously hurling nasty insults at the Governor.
Kakamega Senator Bonny Khalwale who is a member of the Committee took to his Twitter account to express his disappointment.
"It has been a low moment of shame in Parliament," he said.
