Kidero's Motorcade Stoned in Dandora

Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero was on Wednesday caught up in a chaotic scene after enraged youth in Dandora pelted his motorcade with stones.

According to reports, the fracas erupted when the Governor refused to give money to a crowd that had gathered at Friends Secondary School.

The Governor escaped unharmed but unfortunately, three MediaMax journalists, accompanying the Governor to the event, were injured as their vehicle and that of the police were heavily stoned.

Police officers were forced to fire in the air to disperse the violent youth.

Confirming the incident, Dr Kidero sharply condemned the act stating that he would never give handouts.

"This should be condemned as journalists should be protected from hooliganism and they were stoned because I did not give money. Let it be known I will never give handouts," the Nairobi Governor said.

The reporters were rushed to a hospital in Buruburu.

In a statement to newsrooms, the Kenya Union of Journalists criticised the violence stating that journalist must be given protection when covering political rallies.

"We wish to inform the politicians that any violence against journalists shall not be tolerated. KUJ will seek legal redress against such primitive acts and will launch campaigns for media blackouts against politicians using violence on their messengers as their campaign tools,” warned Mr Oduor in a statement to the newsroom.

"Journalists have no role in political rivalries between Dr Kidero and his opponents and therefore their safety must be guaranteed by the organizers of the political rallies.”
