Labour Court Revokes the Sacking of 2 Police Officers Who Blocked President Uhuru's Motorcade

The Employment and Labour Relations Court on Friday reprimanded a driver in the Presidential motorcade for endangering the life of President Uhuru Kenyatta and his wife First Lady Margaret Kenyatta.

The reprimand was delivered in a ruling read by Justice James Rika in a case where two traffic police officers were fired after they were allegedly seen taking a bribe.

However, Justice Rika, revoked the sacking of the two officers, noting that there was no evidence of them taking a bribe.

Corporal Barnaba Kimeli and Constable Joel Atuti made national headlines after it was reported that the President had seen them taking bribes from a matatu driver.

Their dismissal was also on the basis of blocking the Presidential motorcade while the head of state was touring Mombasa.

Coast regional police Commander Francis Wanjohi stated that the action of the two officers risked causing an “international disaster” against President Kenyatta and the First Lady.

The judge, however, placed blame on the driver in the Presidential motorcade indicating that he should have been keen when driving given that, “Presidential Security must not be trivialised with scare mongering.”

The judge noted that the traffic police were on duty, adding that the Presidential guards should not have put in place the right security measures before the Presidential visit.

The claim of the traffic officers receiving a bribe was also proven false after the matatu driver testified that he had not given a bribe but was arrested after escaping arrest.
