Lawyers Ahmednassir Abdullahi, Makau Mutua and Donald Kipkorir Speak on Joho's Arrest

Three top lawyers in the country have raised serious concerns over the alleged arrest of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho on Friday afternoon.

The lawyers who include; Senior Counsel Ahmednassir Abdullahi, Donald Kipkorir and Makau Mutua made varied remarks which have sparked suspicion on the intent of the supposed apprehension of Mr Joho.

Mutua, who is a law professor, opined that the arrest was a strategy by the Jubilee Government to intimidate the Opposition ahead of the General Election.

According to Mr Mutua, Jubilee was afraid that the National Super Alliance (NASA) could work like Narc in 2002 and ouster it from power.

"Jubilee has panicked. That’s why Jubilee is attacking its critics and withdrawing security of governors critical to it like Hassan Joho," Mutua said during an interview.

At the same time, Mr Kipkorir mentioned that it was a sign of disrespect to the Governor and a huge mistake by the Government.

"If it is true that #JohoArrested, then the Govt is committing its biggest blunder. For the record, I aver that Joho deserves respect," Kipkorir said.

On the other hand, Mr Abdullahi remarked that Joho's arrest was a well-orchestrated plan between him and Coast Regional Coordinator Nelson Marwa - who he claimed was anti-Jubilee.

"Coast Commissioner Marwa is a JOHO mole & enemy of JUBILEE. His stupid fights with JOHO are triggered on the order of JOHO," Abdullahi inferred.

The said detention of Joho also sparked an array of reactions among political pundits with Mutahi Ngunyi condemning the Government for the drastic move.

“ARRESTING Joho: BAD IDEA - If it is TRUE. Withdrawing his SECURITY, also BAD. Revolutions are FUELLED by SUCH Blunders,” Ngunyi wrote online.

The Mombasa Governor was allegedly detained at Urban police station after storming the station in the company of four Members of Parliament (MPs) to demand the release of his friend who had been arrested earlier.

"Hon. Rashid Bedzimba, Hon. Abdulswamad, Sharifff Nassir, Hon. Suleiman Dori and I were placed under arrest for alleged obstruction of arrest charges at the Coast Police Provincial Headquarters by one inspector Rop," Joho wrote on Facebook.

Joho claimed that police had raided his friend's house in Nyali and arrested him without any explanation.
