Man Charged With Impersonating Senator Sonko for Fraud

A man accused of impersonating Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko on social media was Friday arraigned in court.

The man, charged on three counts of charges, all relating to fraud denied having impersonated the senator by creating a Facebook page under the name “Mike Sonko Foundation”.

The prosecution presented its case against the suspect- Joseph Gitau Njoki said to have posted a message with the intention to con Kenyan citizens.

The said message, allegedly posted on July 11, 2014 read “This morning, I have issued cheques worth Sh6.2 million to Kenyans who sent to me Sh1000 on my M-Pesa line 0713004255. Keep on sending as I will continue giving out millions. To all my fans, comment wisely to avoid to be banned from this page”.

According to The Nation, the senator who was in court to testify called the suspect “a conman and a thief” who was out to use his (Sonko) name to cheat Kenyans for his own gain.

The suspect was also accused of having fraudulently Ksh.200, 000 from Gideon Macharia Maina on April 11, having lied that he could help him buy a new Nissan matatu.

The suspect, who is said to have fled to South Africa before his arrest, remains in police custody, as he was denied bond.
