Shocking details of the horrific torture of students in one of the country's academic giants, Maseno School, have emerged just a month after similar cases were exposed at Alliance High.
In a report compiled by Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Ministry of Education officials, Form One students in the school revealed that prefects had been mercilessly beating them after the expiry of a period called "Grace Period".
The students disclosed the prefects had formed a group called "karaos" which focussed on meting out punishment to students including forcing them to carry out duties on chilly mornings without warm clothings.
"The prefects were high-handed and harsh. They beat other students with belts and punished them after the night preps at 10.50pm,” the learners disclosed.
They further divulged that they severally reported the matter to the administration but no action was taken since the prefects had been appointed by the teachers and not elected by students as recommended.
Apart from the vicious acts by school prefects, the report further revealed that teachers also used to severely beat the learners with hockey sticks and test tubes.
Worst of it is the rampant cases of molestation which students claimed the institution's management was aware of, but never bothered to act even after several incidents were reported.
According to the TSC findings, 40 out of 62 students affirmed that homosexuality and sexual molestation was evident in the school and accused the prefects of orchestrating the acts.
One student narrated how he reported an incident of attempted rape by a senior cubemate to the Deputy Principal but was asked to follow the normal reporting channels.
In a questionnaire administered by the investigation team, one of the learners stated: “I heard there were homosexual practices in the school and I found that it is true. Last year, two students were expelled for being gay and I always see it by my own eyes.”
Affirming the claims, another boy added: "I hate the fact that we are abused and mostly sexually. It's really bad. The prefects and senior students tend to molest us sexually."
Last month former Maseno Principal Mr Paul Otula, who had served in the school for 16 years, was sent on compulsory following allegations of failing to stop sexual molestation and bullying.
