Matiang'i Reveals Teachers Will Face Action Over Misconduct During 2016 KCSE Marking

Education Cabinet secretary Fred Matiang’i on Thursday indicated that about four teachers are set to face disciplinary action following misconduct during the marking of the 2016 KCSE Examination.

While releasing the KCSE results at Shimo La Tewa High School in Mombasa, Dr Matiang’i noted that the said teachers had been nabbed abetting irregularity during marking of the national exam.

“I have to be honest and tell you we noticed misbehaviour in four teachers. We removed them from the marking centres immediately and we have surrendered their details to the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to deal with them,” the Education CS stated.

Matiang’i observed that there was a level of “professional recklessness and irresponsibility” among Education stakeholders, a scenario he warned would not be tolerated.

For the first time, the marking centres were all located in Nairobi and its surroundings in a move that greatly increased efficiency and effectiveness of the marking process, according to the Education CS.

The results of the 2016 KCSE exam have left many baffled after it emerged that of the over 500,000 students who sat the exam, only 88,929 candidates scored between A-plain and C+.

Even more shocking was that only 141 candidates scored an A-plain despite thousands of students attaining the top grade in previous years.

Despite the huge drop in performance, President Uhuru Kenyatta maintained that the final results and the whole marking process were credible.

“Although there was a significant drop in the performance in this year’s KCSE examinations, compared to the previous year, the results by and large posted a normal performance curve – a clear indication are that the examinations marking and final results are credible,” Kenyatta stated.
