Matiang'i Warns Universities Violating Regulations

Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i has threatened to shut down universities which have been compromising the provision of quality education in the country.

Speaking on Tuesday at Jogoo House, Matiang'i expressed concern that a number of universities have been violating regulations and statutes laid down by the Commission for University Education (CUE).

The CS further warned that the government would withdraw all academic certificates issued to higher learning institutions without the authority of CUE.

“We are concerned that some universities are admitting people without minimum entry requirements for University Education. We are keenly watching these universities offering online degrees as some of them are doing so without the express approval and authority of CUE,” he stated.

He directed the Commission to carry out an audit of programmes being offered by various universities and establish whether students enrolled for such degrees had the necessary qualifications.

“We are going to take difficult and painful decisions to restore order in university education. We cannot have people getting degrees without learning for it,” he stated.

He added that the country had a strong education system which the government would not allow to be eroded.

In November, the CS cautioned that all Universities which have been mentioned in corruption cases would lose their Charters.

Also included in the list were institutions that issue certificates to politicians without qualifying in order to be cleared for the General Election.
