Mike Sonko Reportedly Rejected Cabinet Secretary Position

New revelations have emerged indicating that President Uhuru Kenyatta's Jubilee administration offered Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko a Cabinet position to woo him to drop his Governorship bid and support former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth for the City's Governor seat.

The Star quotes sources within the Presidency as having intimated that Sonko was offered the position of Cabinet Secretary for the Nairobi Metropolitan Region - a new post that would have been created for him.

The flamboyant Senator apparently rejected the offer that would have seen him oversee Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Murang’a and Machakos Counties.

“We have given up on Sonko. We wanted him to back Kenneth and we even offered him many other options, but he has rejected all of them,”  the source stated.

Sonko is said to have stood firm, insisting that he would not step aside for Kenneth.

“The senator has insisted he wants to be governor. Let Jubilee people decide who between the two should be the governor candidate,” an aide to DP Ruto stated.

This new revelation comes a week after the Jubilee Party had indicated that the party was deliberating on how to reach a consensus between Kenneth and Sonko.

It is believed that Jubilee fears that the long-standing feud between the two could cause an upheaval within the party if the two candidates go to the primaries and this may affect the presidential vote.
