Most Wanted Criminals in Kisumu Gunned Down

Police in Kisumu shot dead a suspect during a robbery incident at an M-Pesa shop in Manyatta estate on Tuesday.

Chris Omondi Okello aka Koskei, was considered to be a mastermind of crime and one of the most wanted criminals in the lakeside City.

Two of his accomplices narrowly escaped the 7pm operation but police affirmed that they would soon be captured.

“With the assistance of the public who give us helpful tip-offs, the police will run these criminals out of town,” County Police Commander Nelson Njiri said.

On Saturday, another “hardcore criminal”, Mohammed Hussein Sharrif aka Mzito was also shot dead at Riat area after he was trailed for days by the police.

Mzito was gunned down after a shootout near Kisumu International Airport following a series of violent robberies in the town in which he was a major suspect.

After a tip off from the public, the police raided Mzito's house and killed him when he attempted to escape.

A homemade gun that could fire bullets was recovered at the scene with three other rounds of ammunition.

The gangster had been arrested earlier after a four-man gang stormed a wood-based industrial complex in the town and escaped with Sh100,000 but was later released on cash bail.

"Mr Hussein was released on a cash bail of Sh102,000 but investigations revealed that he was involved in yet another robbery at Egima Hotel where a watchman was killed on October 9 and his face seen on CCTV cameras," said Njiri.

This comes a week after Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinett visited the city where he promised vigilance and enhanced security for residents. Boinett further urged the public to give information to police whenever they encountered any suspicious activities.

Since the IG's visit, police have neutralized five suspected robbers and arrested nine others in 10 days.
